First, it's good to know how to conjugate the verb to be in its past tense before we go to the past progressive .

Singular form-> I was ,you were ,he was,she was,and it was

Plural form -> we were , you were , and they were

We use The past progressive to describe an action that was in progress at a specific time in the past.

Look at these tense :

• I was talking on the phone

• We were eating dinner

They are in the past continuous tense or bus progressive.so, how to form the past continuous?

- We use the past tense of the verb to be so either was or were the base form of the verb and ing.

• Was /were +verb+ing : I was working late ,we were cooking lunch

- Now we need to pay extra attention to verb that end in an 'e' such us take ,make,and close. These verb drop their 'e' ...

• He was making dinner

• They were taking the bus for school

- We also need to pay attention to verb that have one syllable end in consonant and are preceded by a vowel because they double their final consonant such us verb sit, get, and run .

• She was running fast

• We were sitting in the class

- We used past simple form of to be was or were .the base form of the verb and ing

• Was /were +verb+ing : was I getting close ?

- And also in negation,we use past simple form again but we add not to it contacting it into wasn't or weren't .

• Was/ were +not+verb+ing : I wasn't waiting for you,we weren't cutting paper .

And when do you use past continuous

1. A temporary activity in the past . It started in the past and it was finished in the past. For example : I was watching television at that moment , it was raining yesterday.

2. A temporary activity in the past, interrupted by a short action . This short action is usually expressed by the past simple. For example : I was watching television, when he called.

3. For something that was planned before a certain Time in The Future . For example : I was trying to Dubai, but his meeting was cancelled.

An example of past progressive tense in conversation :

The teacher was in the classroom when i was talking to her. Then she asked me some questions, what i was doing at home when my mother was not at home.

Teacher : What were you doing, when your mother was not at home?

Putri : I was playing a game when my mother was not at home.

Teacher : Who came to your house when you were playing a game?

Putri : My cousin came to my house when i was playing a game.

Teacher : What was your cousin doing while you were playing a game?

Putri : My cousin was cooking noodle while i was playing a game.

Teacher : Was your sister at home when you were playing a game?

Putri : Yes, she was. She was at home when i was playing a game.

Teacher : What was your sister doing while you were playing a game?

Putri : My sister was watching tv while i was playing a game.
